Read Proverbs 21:5–31, noting the key words and phrases indicated below.

GET-RICH-QUICK SCHEMES: The sluggard desires wealth as much as anyone—he just doesn’t want to work for it. His conflicting desires will destroy him.

21:5. EVERYONE WHO IS HASTY: The contrast here is between the diligent, who carefully plan ahead, and the sluggard, who hopes to get rich quickly and with little investment. The diligent worker makes a concerted effort at every step of a project, striving to do his best and produce quality work. The sluggard, on the other hand, maintains a “good enough” work ethic.

9. BETTER TO DWELL IN A CORNER OF A HOUSETOP: Roofs in biblical times were open-like patios, so a small arbor or enclosure in the corner of a flat roof was an inconvenient place to live.

10. WICKED DESIRES EVIL: So strongly does the wicked person seek to do evil that he will not spare his neighbor if he gets in his way.

13. SHUTS HIS EARS TO THE CRY OF THE POOR: It offends the Creator when a person neglects the poor, who are part of His creation.

17. HE WHO LOVES PLEASURE: When the sluggard does work, his motivation is to attain pleasure. The diligent, by contrast, work with a long-term perspective. Wine and oil suggest luxury and self-indulgence—things the diligent avoid but the sluggard craves.

25. THE DESIRE OF THE LAZY MAN KILLS HIM: The sluggard often has expensive tastes, and he covets the lifestyle of the rich and famous. The problem is that he is unwilling to expend long-term effort in acquiring the resources to live in high style even if such a goal were worthwhile. (Proverbs makes it abundantly clear that such a goal leads a man to destruction.)

26. THE RIGHTEOUS GIVES AND DOES NOT SPARE: The wise person is not focused on such temporal riches and luxuries but on eternal treasure. This focus enables the wise to give to the poor rather than consuming his wealth on dissipation and pleasure.
